📻 History: KWFN 97.3 The Fan first signed on as KSEA on January 15, 1964, in San Diego. The frequency later became KSON-FM, and for decades it was one of the city's best-known country music stations. In 2017 the country format moved elsewhere and 97.3 became KEGY, branded "97.3 The Machine" with a hot talk format.
In April 2018 Entercom (later renamed Audacy) relaunched the station as the sports talk outlet 97.3 The Fan, and the call letters changed to KWFN, a nod to the word "Fan". The relaunch brought San Diego Padres baseball to the station, with hour-long pre-game and post-game shows. In 2019 five fill-in boosters were permitted to improve coverage in La Jolla, Ramona, San Marcos, Escondido and Encinitas.
Today KWFN is the flagship of the San Diego Padres Radio Network, with an agreement extended through the 2027 season, and also carries Navy football and Westwood One sports. It serves Greater San Diego and the San Diego–Tijuana border region, with local shows alongside national sports programming.
